Kodak Alaris has reduced the price of 35mm Tri-X black-and-white film by up to 30%, it has emerged.

The reduction was announced in an Instagram Story on the Kodak Professional page last week.

The story read: “We have implemented a catalogue price reduction on 135 format Kodak Professional Tri-X 400 black & white negative film. Our two 135-format offerings will see up to a 30% reduction in price, depending on the region.

“Our expectation is that this lower price will be passed on by the retailers to photographers worldwide as inventories turn.”

Digital Camera World reported on the price drop last week and said the reductions could see the film reduced in price from around $10 to $7 in the US, and from around £14 to less than £10 in the UK.

Kosmo Foto has noticed the price of Tri-X has already been reduced by several UK sellers, with some sellers now listing the film for £9 for a 36-exposure roll.

Tri-X is one of Kodak’s most respected films, having been first released as a sheet film in 1940 and then as a 35mm and 120 film in 1954. It has since become a favourite with both news and documentary photographers thanks to its versatility and atmospheric grain.

Kodak Alaris’s decision to reduce the price of Tri-X follows a series of price increases on Kodak-branded films since before the Covid pandemic. Kodak Alaris has the exclusive right to market photographic films made by Eastman Kodak.

Most recently, however, there are signs of price reductions. In November last year, Kodak Alaris announced a price drop of up to 35% on some of its 120 format film range.

These price drops also followed the release of a new “budget” 120 colour film – Kodak Gold 200 120 – which was released in March 2022. The film was marketed as a cheaper alternative to films such as Portra 160 and 400.

A welcome development! I already have a freezer full of other black and white due to the crazy Kodak increases, which is probably why they did this. I used to shoot TriX exclusively for years, but it hasn’t been worth the premium for years.

[…] A sequel to this post.  And the proof is much better for me this time, because Kodak has now announced a 30% price cut to Tri-X in 35mm!  As I shoot more 35mm Tri-X than anything else this is especially good news for me.  Read the full story at Kosmo Foto: […]

Guess Kodak isn’t selling as much film because of their ridiculous price raises over the years 😄
