German film brand Adox is to release its second colour film this year, called Color Mission Helios.

The new film is described as “a simplified colour film with only four layers of colour and very low sensitivity”, according to the Adox website.

Adox described it as “colour for beginners”.

The film follows in the wake of Color Mission, which was the first colour emulsion produced by the film brand, which is known for its black-and-white films. The film was first released in early 2022 and has been sporadically available since.

Adox said: “We are currently casting the last layers on our casting machine in Switzerland and hopefully we will be able to offer 35mm film and sheet film for next season.

“Helios requires a lot of light. It rewards you with superfine grain and wonderfully pastel colours.

“It is ideal for long exposures and “removes” anything moving from city landscapes.”

The film has a nominal speed of ISO 3, according to Adox. “This is more practical than you might think now. During the day in the sun and with a reasonably fast lens, you take photos handheld,” it added.

In a German-language news post on its website last week (which was first noticed by the YouTube channel Eclectachrome), Adox unveiled the new film with both a graphic showing how the different layers in the film are arranged and some example images shot in Istanbul in sunny weather, some of which can be seen below.

The images, Adox explains, were all shot on a Leica M6 at f/2.8 and at shutter speeds of either 1/60 or 1/125.

The images all show extremely fine grain and a reddish bias which resembles redscale film or some varieties of expired colour negative film.

The original Adox Color Mission, results of which you can see here, was a more traditional colour print film. It is rated at ISO 200 and has a look similar to Agfa’s vista range of colour negative films.

My question would why, why would you release an iso 3 “color” film which such a red cast. Im worried that this is more a wasted of money for adox. Instead they should be focussing on real quality color film like what Orwo and Harman is doing.
