A new photography fair specialising in rare and collectable photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries is taking place in London for the first time this weekend.

The Other Photography Fair, which takes place amid the annual Photo London festival, has been organised by London auction house Chiswick Auctions.

The fair takes place from 8.30 on Saturday 16 May at the London Hilton Olympia.

“This fair is about reconnecting people with the physical and historical essence of photography,” said Austin Farahar, associate director and head of fine photographs at Chiswick Auctions. “In an increasingly digital world, there is something incredibly powerful about engaging with vintage photographic material, from the Daguerreotype to vintage silver gelatin prints, and all of the wonderful process and formats we can discover in between.

“We’ve created a space where both seasoned collectors and curious newcomers can discover, learn, and purchase incredible photography. There’s just an enormous breadth of fascinating material to discover under the umbrella of photographic art.”

Early bird entry (from 8.30am) costs £15 and normal entry (from 9.30am) costs £3.

The fair is intended to be a “satellite event during Photo London and offering an alternative, deeply focused experience for those passionate about photographic heritage and collecting”, a press release said.

“In addition to exhibitor stands, the fair will feature live demonstrations of early photographic processes, including Wet Plate Collodion, Cyanotype, Photogravure and Salt Paper printing workshops, giving visitors a rare chance to connect with historic photographic techniques.”

The fair is a day before the Photographic camera fair in London, the largest camera fair held in the UK.
