Kosmo Foto’s upcoming photowalk is something a bit different – we’re paying homage to one of the great works of science fiction (and its author) with a special walk around Woking near London.

Woking is the setting for H G Wells’ iconic novel ‘The War of the Worlds’, where a host of decidedly unfriendly aliens crash to earth – or to be precise, Horsell Common on the edge of town – and lay waste to the Home Counties with destructive heat rays before falling victim to… well, read the book if you haven’t already.

To help celebrate Wells’ birthday, (happy birthday for the 21st, Herbert George), we’ll be having a much more peaceful wander round the setting of this sci-fi classic. Kosmo Foto has teamed with local film photography aficionado Stephen ‘Thrifty’ Thrift who knows the town inside out and has worked out a route for us.

And what’s more, we’re getting some help from further afield to lend modern-day Woking an eerie edge…

The fine folk at Harman Photo are sponsoring the walk and everyone who takes part gets a roll of Harman Red as part of their ticket price. This film will be perfect for giving modern-day Woking some Martian-red vibes. Harman Red is a redscale film based on Harman Technology’s first colour negative film, Phoenix. It produces rich red or orange tones and works well even with overcast lighting.

The walk takes place from 11am on Sunday 28 September and costs £15 (plus VAT).  You can buy tickets via the link below:

Woking is easily accessible from London via Waterloo Station and takes around 35 minutes. You can plan your journey via apps like Google Maps or The Trainline.

On top of the walk, there will be the chance to win some fantastic prizes – including some you won’t be able to get on any other walk… we’ll also be finishing with a pint at a pub named after the great man himself.

  1. I met Stephen and many other analogue folk in Woking yesterday, and enjoyed the day immensely… despite ̶B̶r̶e̶x̶i̶t̶… the rain. Many thanks peeps!

I took two cameras along, an Olympus Trip 35 and somewhat cheekily for an analogue day, my Leica Q2. Neither camera really met the brief for a really great photo walk, but I learned two things.

It seems to me that quality with film is better expressed with the widest possible angle of view, and a goodly amount of surface area to expose, but still easily carried in hand or on a shoulder, amongst my dross, the best shots were definitely made with the 28mm (Q2) as opposed to the 35mm (Trip).

The search begins for a nice MF (12 shots) camera with 38mm AOV… (21mm equiv)… I want to get close!

It so happens that Harman, wonderful people that they are make such a film in Mobberley Cheshire, all I need now is to reacquire my dream camera…

Hard of thinking as I am, one camera comes to mind, and bu**er the expense.
