German film brand KONO! has announced its new colour negative film, KONO Color 200.

The company said the film is produced in Germany but a longstanding partner and “stands as a testament to the passion and skill behind analogue photography, inviting creators to continue capturing moments with authenticity, depth, and a splash of fun”.

KONO!’s founder Uwe said: “This brand-new colour emulsion – developed by our trusted, long-standing partner in Germany – is spooled and packaged at the KONO Manufaktur using our own self-designed, self-built machinery. Thanks to this unique setup, we’re proud to be the first to offer it to you – a true global first.”

KONO!’s co-founder Christiane Menardi said: “Our latest film stock comes in ready to shoot standard 36 exp refurbished cartridges and 30.5m bulk rolls – whether you’re a casual shooter or a DIY film loader, this one’s for you. And all that at a fantastic price.”

KONO Color 200 is available now through the brand’s online store and is listed at €9.90 for a 36-frame roll. The bulk roll – enough for around 20 rolls of film – is listed at €159.

KONO! provided sample images taken on the new film which can be seen below.

The film is believed to be based on ORWO NC200, the new colour negative film announced by ORWO but not yet on sale.

This emulsion is also the basis of Optik Oldschool’s OptiColour 200, which was a surprise colour film launch earlier in the year. The German photo lab is offering the film in both 35mm and 120.

The surprise announcement by KONO!, which is best-known for more experimental films, often with pre-exposed elements, comes amid a busy year for film releases.

Harman Technology, home of the Ilford Photo brand of black-and-white films, has released Red, a redscale film based on its first colour emulsion Phoenix, first in 35mm and more recently in 120. It has also brought out Kentmere 200 in its budget-focused Kentmere range of colour films.

Meanwhile, Chinese film producer China Lucky Film is expected to announce its new colour negative film, also a 200-ISO emulsion, in the coming weeks.
