Harman Technology has announced the release of its redscale Red film in 120 format.

The new launch follows the film’s release in 35mm in February this year.

Red is derived from Phoenix, the UK film producer’s first fully in-house colour film, which was first released in December 2023.

The film has a red-sensitive base layer which is exposed to light first, and the resulting pictures have a heavy red, orange or yellow tone. It has an ISO rating of 125.

Harman Technology is best known for its black-and-white films sold under the Ilford Photo and Kentmere brands. The launch of Phoenix saw it branch out into colour film production under the Harman brand.

“The high red sensitivity and lack of anti-halation layer make our Phoenix emulsion the perfect candidate for converting into a redscale film,” Giles Branthwaite, Harman Technology’s sales and marketing director, said when the 35mm version of the film was released.

The film’s release comes just weeks after Harman Technology unveiled Kentmere 200, the latest version of the company’s Kentmere range of black-and-white films.

Like other redscale films, the red bias in images is exaggerated if the film is shot at higher ISOs.

Harman Red is now only the second redscale film in production, joining Lomography’s Redscale XR 50-200 film, which has been in production since 2018.

The film already appears to be available for purchase from retailers, and has a recommended retail price of £10.99.

Kosmo Foto will show results from this film, along with the 35mm version, later in the summer.
