The church of pop music merchandise is a most certainly a broad one.
In Kosmo Foto’s own days as a music journalist in the 1990s and 2000s there were all sorts of promotional wheezes produced for record releases – from a tiny keyring kaleidoscope for English band Ride’s ‘Carnival of Light’ album to psychedelic spinning tops for Icelandic group GusGus (which I still have something in my loft).
And let’s not forget perma-pancaked disco rockers KISS once marketed their own coffin (aka the KISS Kasket).
In support of her most recent album ‘Radical Optimism’, Kosovan-British pop singer Dua Lipa’s online shop has a swathe of new items to buy.
And one in particular might be of interest to film photographers – a reusable waterproof film camera.
The simple reloadable 35mm camera comes in a waterproof outer casing and will work down to 3m (10ft).

The camera comes with a lanyard strap to prevent it drifting off during attempted recreations of the ‘Radical Optimism’ album cover artwork, which sees Lipa floating on the ocean’s surface. The camera could also be used as a festival camera, with its waterproof case shrugging off the reliably damp UK summers.
In the UK, the camera costs £35 – but snappers be aware, the camera doesn’t come pre-loaded with film.
Lipa, who has released three albums since 2017, is a committed film photographer. In 2019 she asked her Instagram followers which London lab she should take her undeveloped film rolls to.
Lipa’s camera comes amid a new surge in interest in point-and-shoot film cameras among Gen Z, buoyed by the influence of models and celebrities rediscovering both early digital models and film compacts.
