British camera maker Alfie Cameras is preparing to launch a new camera which takes pictures on photographic paper and develops them into prints inside the camera.
The new camera, called the Boxx, was teased on Alfie Cameras’ social media channels last month, but now the wood-bodied camera has been announced ahead of a fundraising launch on Kickstarter later in the spring.
“From picture-taking to printmaking, the Boxx camera provides a hands-on experience for every step of the process. This beautifully compact camera allows you to experience the bare bones of photography. Take your time and enjoy the wonderful process of composing and making your own photographic prints.
“With the Boxx, you no longer need to send photos away for developing. Using a range of photographic paper and chemistry, you can create your own prints inside the camera! There is no single way to take a picture, either; our range of lenses including a 100mm portrait lens, a 55mm wide-angle lens, and a 65mm pinhole lens provides endless creative possibilities.”
The taking of a photo and development of the finished print inside the camera is similar to the British Pinsta camera which was announced in 2021, and the traditional “street box” or Afghan camera commonly used to take portraits in the 19th and 20th Centuries.
Alfie Cameras founder Dave Faulkner introduced the new camera on the Alfie Cameras Instagram channel, as well as a “VIP Superfan Club”. Faulkner said the club – which cost £1 ($1.35) to join – meant members would get a free limited edition gold pinhole lens for the camera if they backed the campaign on Kickstarter.
VIP members will also get first notification on early bird prices and early access to a behind-the-scenes series on YouTube Showing “the design, the chemistry, and the craft” of the new camera.
