Ilford Photo has unveiled a new online survey to gauge the size and health of the global film photography market.

The survey – which is open until the end of November – follows an earlier survey in 2022 which drew more than 8,000 results.

Photographers can take part in the survey here.

The 2022 survey found nearly two-thirds of film photographers shot both black-and-white colour film, and a quarter of respondents still preferring to buy film from a physical store than online.

Ilford Photo’s Michelle Parr said the new survey’s results will be shared at the beginning of 2025.

She told Kosmo Foto: “We’re excited to share our latest survey. When we last ran this in 2022 we received over 8,500 replies and we’d love to get more than 10,000 this time. It will help build a picture of what the community wants in 2024 and what is important to them.”

In an earlier press release, Parr said: “This survey is not specific to Ilford, Kentmere or Harman films. We want to build a picture of the entire film community regardless of what brand, format, or type of film they shoot.”

Since the earlier survey was completed, the company which owns the Ilford Photo and Kentmere brands, Harman Technoolgy, has branched into colour film production. Harman Phoenix 200, the first colour film to be designed and manufactured at their plant in Mobberley in the UK, was released in 35mm at the end of 2023.

A 120 version of the film was released in September.
