Fujifilm Japan has announced the discontinuation of Fujicolor Superia X-Tra 400 film, following its earlier disappearance outside of Japan.

The Japanese film producer made the announcement via its news section on Friday (5 April) and the discontinuation is happening with immediate effect.

The statement said: “Sales of ‘FUJICOLOR SUPERIA X-TRA 400’ will end as soon as the stock runs out. In conjunction with this, we will be introducing ‘FUJIFILM 400’, a colour negative film sold overseas, into Japan from today.

“‘FUJIFILM 400” is a colour negative film that maintains the high quality that we have cultivated over the years and achieves natural colours and smooth gradation.

“We look forward to your continued patronage of Fujifilm products.”

The announcement follows the replacing of Superia X-Tra 400 with Fujifilm 400 outside of Japan. The film is made in the US and is a Kodak-made emulsion, possibly the same film as Lomography 400.

As Kosmo Foto, Fujifilm was unveiled in April 2023 via US photographic retailer B&H. It came in the wake of the discontinuation of Fujicolor 200, which was replaced with a Kodak-made film believed to be Gold 200 in January 2022.

There has been intense speculation that Fujifilm – once Eastman Kodak’s greatest rival – has completely walked away from film production, though Provia 100F and Velvia 50 and 100 continue to be listed, aswell as the Japan-only Fujicolor 100 and Superia Premium 400 colour negative films.

Neopan Acros 100 II, the company’s sole remaining black-and-white is now coated and packaged by Harman in the UK, though the emulsion itself is believed to still be made by Fujifilm.

I really hope they don’t stop making Acros II. I love that film.
