Little more than a year after the release of their first original colour film, Harman Technology has launched a new redscale 35mm film called Harman Red.

The new film was announced on Friday (14 February) and comes just 14 months after Harman Phoenix 200 – the first colour film to be invented and produced onsite – was released in December 2023.

The film has a red-sensitive base layer which is exposed to light first, and the resulting pictures have a heavy red, orange or yellow tone.

The new film has an ISO of 125 and is DX coded. Harman Technology is best known for its black-and-white films sold under the Ilford Photo and Kentmere brands, before it branched out into colour film production under the Harman brand.

According to Giles Branthwaite, Harman Technology’s sales and marketing director, the film has been adapted from Phoenix 200.

“The high red sensitivity and lack of anti-halation layer make our Phoenix emulsion the perfect candidate for converting into a redscale film,” he said.

In a press release to accompany the new film, Harman technology said: “It can transform mundane scenes into dystopian masterpieces with hues of red, orange, yellow and green whilst retaining characterful high contrast, vibrancy, and grain.

“Backed by the recent announcement of significant capital investment in both operational and research and development functions, sales from this film will continue to be reinvested to support a roadmap of future colour films,” it said.

Like other redscale films, the red bias is exaggerated if the film is shot at higher ISOs.

The film is available now, with stock already sent to selected retailers across the world.

Harman Red is now only the second redscale film in production, joining Lomography’s Redscale XR 50-200 film, which has been in production since 2018.

Kosmo Foto has been sent some sample rolls of the film which we’ll be shooting for a first rolls post in the coming weeks.

You can see examples shot on the film in the gallery below of shots provided by Harman Technology.
