Chinese film brand Shanghai has unveiled a new colour negative 35mm film called Shenguang 400.

Shnaghai offered a pre-order for the new colour film earlier this year but only now has the film made it onto their online shop.

The film’s shop listing details the following features:

  • True colour reproduction, clear with balanced chromatic aberration
  • High colour saturation and resolution
  • Large exposure latitude
  • 35mm roll film ISO 400/27° in standard process
  • 36 exposures

The film’s listing features an orange box with Shanghai 400 on it, but Shanghai has said the film is now being offered in a new box with the name “Shenguang 400”.

The film is being offered for £10.50 a roll (pricing for customers in the UK) or £96.88 for a pack of 10, which does not include shipping.

The film’s listing includes a handful of images shot on the film.  Other images have also been posted by a user on the Reddit board r/AnalogCommunity.

Both sets of example pictures show a grainy film with a cold colour palette very similar to Original Wolfen NC400 or NC500 or Lomography Metropolis.

Reddit user JMadden64 has already managed to shoot the film and said Shenguang 400 looked very similar to Original Wolfen’s NC400/NC500 but is in much better packaging than the original emulsion, including a metal film canister with DX coding and a cardboard box. (You can see several images on this post.) It has led to much speculation from photographers that the film is Original Wolfen repackaged in China. No photos of developed negatives have yet been published online, however.

The film joins Shanghai’s GP3 100 and 400 black-and-white films, both widely believed to be ORWO black-and-white films. While offering standard 35mm and 120 formats, Shanghai offers its GP3 films in other hard-to-find formats such as 220 and 620.

The Shanghai 400 news comes in the wake of fellow Chinese manufacturer Lucky Film announcing the re-release of its SHD400 black-and-white film and teasing the future release of colour films.
