Toy camera app Hipstamatic has marked its 10th birthday by unveiling a new app with a range of toy camera designs.

The free app, Hipstamatic X, was released on 1 October, PetaPixel reports, and features a range of toy camera-sequence filters matched to an array of fake-but-endearing toy camera designs.

Hipstamatic launched in 2009 with a range of presets which aped analogue processes such as cross processing or the light leaf-splattered look of toy cameras such as the Holga and the Diana F.

It predated Instagram, which also launched as an app influenced by the look of lo-fi analogue cameras.

On the new app, a statement reads: “Experience the retro camera that changed iPhone photography forever. Hipstamatic brings all the joy, quirk, and randomness of film photography to your pocket.

“The all-new Eazy™ Automatic Camera picks the perfect effect depending on what you are shooting. Point. Shoot. Done.

“The new Camera Builder lets you build your rig however you like, including custom analog controls and colors. And the Gear Catalog makes it easier than ever to pick the perfect lens+film combo to create your own personal instant camera.”

The app is separate to the original app, but the new site says that it will remember previous lens and film simulations bought through the old app.

What’s particularly of interest to film fans is the wonderful array of fake film cameras built for the app.

While the app is free, fans are also invited to enroll into the Hipstamatic Makers Club, which offers all lens and film simulations free for 10 years for the price of $2 (£1.63) a month.
