Olli Thomson wrote a lovely piece for my other blog World On Film which I’ll soon be reposting on Kosmo Foto. In the meantime, here’s his experiences with Kosmo Foto Mono, in the Bulgarian capital Sofia.
Where are you from?
I’m originally from Belfast in Northern Ireland but for the last 15 years I’ve been a serial expat. I’m currently living in Sofia, Bulgaria.
How long have you been shooting film?
I shot film way back in the 70’s with a Zorki-4K, then in the 90’s with a succession of Canon SLRs. I finally went digital in 2005 and returned to film a couple of years ago in 2017.
What cameras do you shoot on?
I’ve tried various cameras but I’ve settled for the moment on two – a Nikon FM2N and a Minolta XD.
What other films do you like using?
I’ve barely scratched the surface of what’s available but of those I have tried I like Ilford Delta 100 and 400, HP5 and Kodak Ektar. I recently tried Kodak Pro Image 100 for the first time and quite liked the results with that also.
What are your thoughts about Kosmo Foto Mono?
I like it. Words like ‘classic’ and ‘traditional’ that I have seen used of this film make sense when I see the pictures. I like the balance of acuity and grain. It also takes tweaking in Lightroom very well.
What films would you like to see on the market (old films brought back or new ones)?
That’s hard to say. I’m inclined to stick to what I like without feeling the need to experiment too much with new films. But I’m happy for any new films on the market just to keep a sense of momentum around film photography and give the manufacturers a deeper investment in it.
